WhAt is anThEM?

Boldly we say we are “redefining worship for the next generation…”.

By “redefining” we mean to be vigilant in leading generations to come by returning again and again to the core of what it is to worship the Lord with everything.  We do this by creating new melodies in response to an unchanging God and intelligent lyrics fused with heartfelt responses to biblical understanding and our love for Jesus Christ. With joy we do this publicly for the edification of our church body and with a vision of stewardship for the global body of Christ. We are excited to give the next generation a melodic outlet for their hearts to express praise and lament to the Lord.

Psalm 119:9 says “How can a young man keep his ways pure?  By guarding it according to your word.”  As artists in the church, this is just one of the ways in which we are abiding in the sanctuary of the Lord.  Therefore, the process of writing these songs is as important as the songs themselves.  We have heard it said that music is the language of the heart.  God is at work all over the world, adding to the song of His redeemed ones.  We are another of his many choirs, giving glory to Jesus for his life, death, and resurrection.  Our hope is that you’ll join us with heart, soul and mind praising the risen Savior.

histoRy

In the fall of 2002, I had just started working with teenagers and I was looking for a way to connect the hearts and minds of the next generation with the message of Jesus Christ. I started an event called “Crave” where our band would perform songs that fit into a particular theme. We combined a montage of themes found in pop culture with a club atmosphere to make an outreach event.

As the idea progressed, I felt I had the right idea of using music and video to connect with the souls of young people, but the wrong approach in scrounging for redemptive themes in pop music. What every generation needs is a compelling vision of God. This seems to happen best when God’s people come together for authentic, Christ exalting worship. In this context, the unbeliever “will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, ‘God is really among you!’” (1 Corinthians 14:25)

And so in October of 2006, we had our first “Anthem.” The vision for this event was to be as God-saturated as possible, combining worship and prayer to create an ambiance of revival. Over 700 junior high, high school, and college students gathered under a tent for a night of worship and prayer.

Since then, it has grown considerably, not only numerically, but musically and artistically. I felt the other aspect of this Anthem movement would need to be songs that grew out of the hearts of the local worshipers. Our ministries are filled with talent, and young people just need an outlet for it. Oh for the day when the world’s most gifted artists will aspire to use their talents to build up the body of Christ!

In the spring of 2009, we recorded our first album with all originals entitled “One Life.” It’s only the beginning, as the Anthem song writing team has already compiled another queue of songs for future albums. Our desire is to create melodies and lyrics that will give this generation a voice, a prayer, a lament, and a petition before the throne of God.

Soli Deo Gloria.
